3 Online Workout Ideas for Kids
Well, COVID finally found its way to my family. We’re all fine and giving thanks for the vaccinations that kept us that way. But we’re quarantining with two young boys who’re still going full tilt. So, it’s rowdy. Wild rumpus-y, even. Whew.
To keep the wiggles at bay over the last week, I’ve broken out a few of my favorite online exercise videos for kids. I confess, I’m usually a “Let’s go outside and kick the wiggles” kind of mom–I’m pretty strict about screen time. But when people are sick, or when it’s pouring or freezing outside, I bend the rules. Getting a bit of exercise does wonders for morale around my house. I bet it does in your house too!

Here are 3 of my favorite online exercise ideas for kids:
PE Bowman - These creative workout videos are made by a family with 3 young kids. And it couldn’t be clearer that they’re having a great time with this family project! They range in length, but they’re mostly under 10 minutes. Kids don’t have to know how to read to enjoy them. And they’re legitimately FUN, with special effects and funny details. The favorites in my house are “Lava Leap” and “Dino Dash,” but the Bowman family is always coming up with new ones!
Cosmic Kids Yoga - These yoga videos are more than just workouts: they’re stories with integrated movement. Jamie, the teacher and storyteller, is delightfully engaging…and so is her British accent. Each episode is centered around a familiar story (like Frozen!) or a theme (like dinosaurs). She incorporates some mindfulness at the end; if it’s too woo-woo for your liking, just turn it off before that part.
Whatever workout you love - Kids love being let in on “grown up stuff,” so why not welcome your kids into your workout routine? When I was dying to get in a barre workout the other day, I invited my boys to join an online class with me. And it was a hit! I can’t say my instructor would approve of their form, ahem. But they moved their bodies…and they witnessed me moving mine in a way that makes me feel strong. I’ll call it a win. Obviously, young kids can’t lift heavy weights or keep up with an hour-long kickboxing class. But they’ll love joining you in something you love–at their own speed. If you don’t have an online workout you love, start simple, with the 7-minute workout. (Download the Johnson & Johnson app for more options.) It’s totally kid-friendly and helped my family work through the wiggles during virtual school last year.
Ok, parents–those are a few ideas for giving your active kiddos (and yourself!) a good workout. Hope they help you keep the wiggles at bay on days when you can’t get outside!
